This should probably be in Happy Tails...but wanted everyone to know that raising this litter of pups has been to date one of the most rewarding experiences we have had in rescue. Fostering Brandy and her pups, knowing that they all came SO close to being put to sleep, watching both Brandy and the pups grow and thrive with proper care showed us again just how important what we are doing is. Brandy and her pups came into rescue loaded with fleas, hookworms and roundworms. Brandy had a horrible case of Kennel Cough. Like the trooper Brandy proved herself to be she overcame them all. At the vet with her and the pups when they were 6 days old, I can't even put into words the relief we felt when she tested heartworm negative. Finally this wonderful girl had caught a break!! Without rescue groups and volunteers these dogs lives would have been gone.
Seeing the progress a dog makes after coming into rescue, gaining confidence, seeing a sick dog now healthy and enjoying life, to us there is nothing else other then raising our own children that compares. The joy on the faces of the adoptive family as they take home their new forever friend warms our hearts and always serves as a reminder of why we do what we do.
It was very hard in the beginning 'letting go' and still is at times, but seeing these dogs go from a horror story to a loving family makes it a lot easier to let them go. Knowing that for each one adopted, not only has that dog been saved but it also opens up another opportunity to save another life. Fostering isn't easy at times but I would encourage anyone whose able to try it at least once. The enjoyment and satisfaction you receive from working with these dogs is incredible, surpassed only by the day they leave with their new family and the updates you receive months later seeing how your foster dog has thrived and become a beloved part of their new family.
